Eugene Preobrazhensky, a foundation member of the Bolshevik Party, wrote The New Economics (1926) as a contribution to the problem of socialist industrialisation in a backward, largely peasant country. Suppressed by Stalin as “Trotskyist”, and its author shot in the Great Purge of 1937, the book has long been recognised as the most important
work to date by a Soviet economist, and relevant both to the economic problems of the Soviet Union (and China) today and to those of some
of the newly-independent countries of Asia and Africa which are trying to industrialise themselves in the shortest possible time but without social injustice.
